Exploring New Computational Strategies for Managing Maintenance Activities of Airport Pavement Systems

Abstract In this paper, the optimization of maintenance management problem regarding airport pavements is addressed by developing a series fast computational procedures whose rationales pursue both practical and economical objectives. Particularly, study involves design five new heuristic algorithms replicating different strategies that can be undertaken managers in certain time horizon for reducing pavement costs while considering impact on service level airport. Each algorithm works basis preliminary framework has twofold scope: (i) selecting portions to maintained during provided horizon. (ii) using K-means method based three well-known performance indicators, which, namely, are Residual Life (RL), International Roughness Index (IRI) Pavement Condition (PCI), group selected into homogenous clusters named work-zones. To evaluate effectiveness efficiency proposed coping with programming under investigation, an extended experiments international regulations been arranged. The obtained numerical results revealed no single strategy as most performing terms cost quality conditions pavements. make robust results, sensitivity analysis conducted influence total runway length number sections. However, provide managerial implications, further expanding research contribution.
